Anyone who lived through the 1980s might tell you it did not appear to be a particularly remarkable decade at the time but on reflection it was, of course, a period of tumultuous transformation. Under the shadow of nuclear Armageddon, the decade that began with Reagan and Thatcher laid the foundations of a new post-war neo-liberal economic settlement and caused the conditions for the end of the Cold War – part one, at any rate.
