Brussels Airport plays a key role in the delivery of the COVID vaccine across the world.

Brussels has become the key hub for the global distribution of the Pfizer Comirnaty COVID-19 Vaccine, with the vaccine being delivered to more than 40 destinations globally in over 100 flights.

Daily shipments of the vaccine have been carried out by DHL. Meanwhile, larger shipments of the vaccine have been carried by airlines including Singapore Airlines, Qatar Airways, Emirates, El Al, Virgin and United Airlines according to a statement by Brussels airport.

With many pharmaceutical facilities located in and around Belgium along with a state of the art pharmaceutical gateway at Brussels Airport, it is no surprise that the city has become a key hub for the COVID-19 vaccine distribution.

Similarly, Brussels Airport was involved in “Project Sunrays”, a joint initiative of Pharma Aero and TIACA that aims to ensure better communications and guidelines between both the air cargo industry and pharmaceutical shippers.

Analysis by Air Cargo News shows that despite passenger numbers plummeting by over 83% (compared with 2020 levels), full freighter demand at the airport has surged by over 72.5% in January. In addition, the total volume of goods handled by the logistics side of the airport increased to 18.4% (58,000 tons).

Danny Hendrikse, VP of Intercompany Operation at Pfizer said that Brussels Airport was an integral partner in the rollout of Comirnaty.

Meanwhile, Arnaud Feist, CEO of Brussels Airport commented further in a press statement stating that: “with our logistics partners, we have invested a lot in the preparation of this essential transport and we can therefore offer a streamlined chain to get the vaccine to its destination in optimal conditions”.
